March General CDS Project: Spelling Bee and Science Quiz Competition


THEME: BUILDING A BETTER FUTURE

The General C.D.S project by members of the National Youth Service Corps in Igboeze North Local Government area in Enugu State for the month of March featured a Spelling bee and a quiz competition for Secondary schools in the Local Government Area. 

There were 10 participating schools which provided 2 junior secondary students for the SPELLING BEE and 2 senior secondary students for the Quiz (Science and Mathematics) competition. The event which was hosted by the members of the 2016 Batch A and B,
was supported by the principals of the participating schools. 
The schools include;
  1. City High School, Ogrute 
  2. Model Comprehensive Secondary School, Ekposhi 
  3. Igbo-Eze Secondary School, Enugu-Ezike 
  4. Community Secondary School, Imufu 
  5. Community Secondary School, Amufie 
  6. Community Secondary School, Agu-Ibeje 
  7. Community Secondary School, Igogoro 
  8. Unique Foundation Comprehensive School, Uda 
  9. Community Secondary School, Uda 
  10. Community Secondary School, Amorba-Inyi
Registration Of Participants
The event which featured participants for both junior and senior secondary classes started with registration of contestants by the registering officer at about 9.35am after which instructions for the competition was read out to all contestants present and adopted by the corps member representing the school. 
Thereafter, the first round of the spelling bee competition kicked off immediately for the junior category with all participating school having two contestants representing them making a total of 20 contestants. The first round which posed to be a warm up round saw no contestant removed, next was the elimination round which saw any contestant that failed to spell correctly the spelling he/she was asked to spell eliminated. At the second round, a total of 7 contestants was eliminated remaining 13 more contestant for the next round. The third round which was also an elimination round saw 5 more contestants eliminated and 2 disqualified. The disqualified students were discovered to be senior students from their schools making them unqualified since the competition was for junior category. The remaining contestants were given the opportunity to prepare for the final round while the senior category commenced.

The competition for the senior category also saw two contestants represent their schools for quiz on the subjects Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Chemistry. A total of 17 contestants participated in this competition with one of the schools not being represented and another school having only one contestant. The first round of the competition saw each school asked two questions each from all subjects for the competition and points were accumulated for the round with each question being 5 points to be answered within a specified time. The first round saw 3 schools eliminated and 6 schools remaining for the next round. The second round was even stiffer as time was reduced for answering each question and each school also asked 4 questions each with also 5 points for each of the questions. This round saw two schools tie with 20 points as the highest for the round and three other schools having 15 points each, hence another school was eliminated with the three schools with 15 points to compete for the third position and the two schools with 20 points to compete for first place. A break was given to the contestants for the senior category and the finals for junior category commenced.

The final for the junior category saw 6 contestants compete for the first, second and third position. This round had them spell a range of words selected by the panel of judges and anyone who fails the spelling for the round was eliminated. this continued till three contestants were left. After a run of 6 spellings, the third place was won by the C.S.S Uda who missed her spelling. Left were the two contestants who after a stiff competition the winner (C.S.S Amorba-Inyi) after correctly spelling 6 words in 7 rounds as to the runner up (Unique Foundation, Uda) who had 4 correct spellings in the round saw the competition ended.

Immediately the final for the senior category commenced,with the battle for the third place. This led to a question asked to each of the three schools until Community Secondary School, Uda emerged as the third place winner. Then the contest for third place between the two top schools of M.C.S.S Ekposhi and C.S.S Imufu commenced with each school asked two questions each for mathematics, physics and biology and the duo was still at a tie. The tie was broken when it came to chemistry, at this point Community Secondary School, Imufu answered their final question wrong whereas M.C.S.S Ekposhi answered both questions correctly as they emerged the winner of the competition, placing C.S.S Imufu in second position.

    Certificate of participation was presented to all participants in the competition by the presidents of the different C.D.S groups, hence reminding them that they were all winners. The First, Second and third positions for both the Junior and Senior category were given medals of Gold, Silver and Bronze respectively by the principal Unique Foundation School, while the schools that emerged First Position winners were given a trophy which hence was a property of the schools. Absolute success of the event was achieved as celebrations thrilled the observers who revered the students that emerged winners and congratulations were in order to the corp members who prepared and tutored these students to stardom.
